Guide To Choosing The Right Trailers For Your Needs

Published By:

When selecting a trailer, there are many things to consider before making a purchase. Whether you’re buying used, new, or just renting, you’ll need to know what kind of trailer is best for the job you need to get done. Here’s a guide to help you select the right trailer for your needs.

End Dump Trailers: the trailer for when you need space to maneuver

If you’re looking for the right trailer to get you off-loaded in a tight space, consider an end dump trailer. End dump trailers are durable, and with their higher sidewalls offer a lot of storage room. You can get an end dump trailer in lighter aluminum or in heavy steel construction, depending on the type of application you’ll be using the trailer for. Also, as these trailers are meant to dump to the back, they take up less space and allow you to maneuver in a tighter space.

Side Dump Trailers: the trailer for when you need the greatest stability

If space is not your problem, but a heavy payload is, then you might want to look at a side dump trailer. Side dump trailers are very stable, making them safer for offloading with less chances of a tip-over or spill. Not to mention, their increased stability might also keep your insurance rates down. The other good thing with side dump trailers is that you can possibly pull multiple trailers behind your rig, depending on the application.

Belt Trailers: the trailer with high versatility

Depending on what type of materials you’re hauling, you might want to consider the versatility of a belt trailer. These trailers are great for wet payloads, allowing you to offload without worrying about the space needed for side dumping or end dumping. For a great selection of belt trailers in the Amarillo, Lubbock and Odessa, Texas areas, check out Area Trailer Sales and Rentals’ inventory.

Flatbed Trailers: the trailer that is easiest to unload

Need a way to haul your payload without worrying about sides, belts, floors, doors, or anything else? Choose a flatbed trailer to move a wide variety of cargo, with the easiest offloading of any trailer. Stack your payload right on the trailer and get the job done as fast as possible.

Refrigerated Trailers: the trailer that keeps it all cool

If fresh produce is on your list of cargo, then you’ll want to look into the best kinds of refrigerated trailers available in the Amarillo, Lubbock and Odessa, Texas areas. Keep freight protected in a controlled, chilled environment. Safely haul produce and other fresh products, and even have room to store dry goods.

Dry Van Trailers: the best trailer for freight

If simple freight is what you’re hauling, then a simple dry van trailer is what you need. Protect your cargo from the elements, keep your doors locked to prevent theft, and get your freight where it needs to go. Dry vans are easy to load and unload as well, making them a great option for many different applications.

Things to Consider When Choosing A Trailer for Harvest Time

Published By:

With harvest time just around the corner, it’s important to explore the many options available to make your time in the fields more efficient. Saving time and getting the most out of your harvest is always the main goal. If you’re going to spend dawn to dusk (and sometimes beyond) working, you’ll want to have the harvest quantity to show for it. One of the best ways to increase efficiency is to upgrade your trailer for harvest time.

Choose a trailer for harvest time with new technology, not just a larger size

If you’re deciding to upgrade your trailer for the harvest season, remember that bigger trailers are not always better. With acres and acres to work, sometimes the smaller machine with the newest technology will do a better job. If you’re in the Lubbock, Odessa or Amarillo Texas area and looking for a new trailer, check out the selection of new and used trailers with advanced technology at Area Trailer Sales and Service.

Cruise Down the Highway Quickly

Does your trailer get up to highway speeds? Put aside the days getting passed by every car on the road (and even other trailers) and get to work faster. Head down the highways at good speed and get into your fields to harvest! At Area Trailer Sales and Service, choose a trailer that is safely rated for highway speeds so you can get to work as quickly as possible.

Preventative Maintenance Wins the Race

By choosing the right trailer for harvest time and keeping your maintenance on track, you’ll win the harvest race. Schedule preventative maintenance checks long before the season starts and tend to any needed service so you don’t need down time for repairs during that precious harvesting time window.

Take Your (Precious) Time During Harvest

Sure, you want to work as quickly as you can, but working too fast and creating waste never got anyone ahead. Use your efficient trailer to the best of its abilities. Your time on the field is precious, so make sure you are operating at a pace that gets results and produces the most harvest. If you need to slow down your process, it’s worth it so you don’t have to repeat your work later on.

Select a trailer for harvest time with new technology, great speed and the right tools for your harvest job at Area Trailer Sales & Service, serving the Odessa, Amarillo and Lubbock Texas areas. Make the most of your harvest by using your time wisely and keeping up with maintenance and service before you need repairs.

Common Causes for Trailer Brakes Locking Up When Applied

Published By:

If your electric trailer brakes are locking up when applied or locking up while driving, there could be several causes. When driving with your trailer attached in or around the Texas cities of Amarillo, Lubbock or Odessa, you’ll want to be fully assured that your trailer brakes are in sound condition. If your brakes are locking up, you might ask yourself if your brakes are properly grounded? Or, does your brake controller work correctly? Here are some of the most common causes of locking electric brakes on a trailer.

A Bad Electrical Ground Can Make Electric Trailer Brakes Lock Up

If your main ground wire and brake magnet ground wires are not properly attached, the bad ground connection could be causing your trailer brakes to lock up. Check your main vehicle ground wire and assure that it is attached to a clean, bare metal surface. Check for wear, corrosion, rust or dents in the wiring. Look at the ground wires on the sides of your trailer as well to determine they are properly attached to a clean metal surface. While looking over your grounds, you can also inspect your main power wires to see if there are any damaged, dented or corroded connections.

Faulty Wiring or Shorted Wires May Cause Locking Trailer Brakes

After assuring your ground wires are fastened securely to the correct type of surface, look over your power wires. Are any wires damaged, dented or corroded? A shorted-out wire could be to blame for locking brakes. It is also good to use a circuit tester to check that the power wires are functioning properly. Connect the tester to your main power wires and apply the brakes. This should give you a positive signal. Also check that turning on your headlights or turn signals does not give a positive signal. Bad wiring could cause your brakes to lock up when applied.

Locking Trailer Brakes Due to Faulty Brake Controller

If you’ve made sure all of your wiring is sound and secure, then another possible cause for locking brakes could be your brake controller. To test the functionality of the controller, use a circuit tester connected to the brake controller (typically blue) wire. Apply your manual override and check that a positive signal comes across. Release the override and check that no power is conducted. If there is zero power during both steps, or releasing the manual override causes a surge in power – this means you need a new brake controller.

There could be many reasons that your electric trailer brakes are locking up while driving, or when they are applied. Make sure to thoroughly check your brake system, from the controller to the wiring and ensure your brake system is working properly before setting out on the roads of the Lubbock, Amarillo and Odessa, Texas area. Consult a professional electrician or trailer mechanic if assistance is needed; and never drive with faulty brakes!

Tips for Buying a Used Trailer

Published By:

Buying a used trailer is a great option for drivers who are interested in getting into the transportation industry as owner operators instead of working for someone else. You can save a lot of money while still buying a trailer that meets your needs. Take the following tips when looking at used trailers to determine whether or not a given trailer will be a good investment.

Ask the owner why he’s selling the trailer

Before you start to inspect the trailer, talk to the owner about why he’s decided to sell his trailer. He may offer a simple, straightforward answer, such as upgrading to a newer trailer or getting into another industry. The more you know about the trailer upfront, the less surprises there will be in the future.

Inspect the mechanical elements

Begin the mechanical inspection by checking the tires, wheels, and axles. If the tires are more than five years old, be prepared to replace them to minimize the risk of a blowout on the highway.

Finally, check the electrical system and wheel bearings.

If you don’t feel comfortable completing the mechanical inspection yourself, take a mechanic with you or ask to take the trailer to a reputable mechanic. He’ll be able to assess the overall mechanical condition of the trailer and whether you’ll need to save for major repairs or replacement parts in the near future. A mechanic will also provide expertise about the availability of replacement parts. If it will be difficult to find replacement parts, the trailer may not be your best option.

Inspect the structural elements

Check under the trailer for surface and structural rust. It’s easy to fix surface rust by swapping out the affected part. However, structural rust, such as rust on the trailer frame, may mean a large repair or that the trailer is nearing the end of its life. You want to ensure your frame is sound and won’t give way in the near future. Additional exterior concerns include loose or peeling walls or siding. Look for broken welds, cracks, and impact damage as well. Walk through the interior of the trailer, paying attention to soft spots on the floor, leak stains on the ceiling, and any other issues with the floor, walls, or ceiling.

Request the trailer’s service records

A comprehensive overview of the trailer’s service records will provide a good indication of its overall performance and whether you may be facing significant problems in the near future. Make sure to confirm the trailer’s VIN number with the number on the records to verify that the documentation is legitimate.

Finally, trust your gut instinct. A used trailer is still a major investment. You want to make sure you feel confident about your purchase before you bite the bullet.

Agricultural Trailers

Published By:

There are many types of trailers that can be classified as agricultural trailers. Most often, agricultural trailers are exempt from the registration requirements that most vehicles and other types of trailers must adhere to – if they are used only for agricultural jobs. Though they do not need to go through the safety measures that are part of the registration process, all equipment should function properly and be in good condition.

What is an agricultural trailer?

To be classified as an agricultural trailer, it must not have an engine and must only be towed by another vehicle. It must be:

  • Used in an agricultural environment.
  • Towed by a machine used in agriculture.

An agricultural trailer must be used exclusively for farming needs.

The maximum mass of an agricultural trailer

Owners of agricultural trailers need to be aware of the maximum trailer mass that is specified by the manufacturer of the towing vehicle. The maximum safe mass for an agricultural trailer should be the lowest of the mass limit for the tires, axles and suspension of the towing vehicle and trailer.

Agricultural trailer and brakes

When using an agricultural or farming trailer, you should keep in mind the limitations of the towing vehicle and the trailer. The stability and ability of vehicles for sufficient braking can be adversely affected by road conditions, loose gravel, hills and rough surfaces. Inappropriate speed can also cause adverse situations and safety concerns. Jackknifing can be avoided by stopping in a reasonable distance and only towing using a vehicle that has brakes that are working and in good condition.

Towing agricultural trailers

Towing an agricultural trailer is only as safe as its tow couplings. Safety chains are required for all hitch types to keep your trailer on the road in the case of an accidental detachment. The chains should be attached to the trailer and towing vehicle in such a way to hold the trailer if the coupling should fail.

Towing couplings – both on the trailer and the towing vehicle – should have a suitable rating for the trailer and must be clearly marked.

You need to be seen – visibility and agricultural trailers

When towing a large agricultural trailer, other drivers need to be sufficiently warned of the size of the trailer that is being pulled. There are often problems resulting in poor visibility of agricultural trailers while on the road. Make sure the trailer’s paint is adequate so it can be seen properly by other drivers. The size and shape of the trailer should be taken into consideration before traveling on roads not equipped for the size of your trailer.

Lights on agricultural trailers.

Check periodically to see that your trailer’s brake and signal lights are working properly. Reflectors should be installed on the front, rear and sides of the trailer.

Make sure your trailers and all of your farm and agricultural equipment are kept in good working condition. Your work will go more smoothly and you and your workers will stay accident-free. Regular maintenance will cut down on costly repairs and replacing your expensive machinery.

Texas Inspection Requirements For Trailers

Published By:

When buying new or used trailers from Area Trailer Sales and Rentals in the Texas Panhandle region, it is wise to make sure you are aware of the current Texas Inspection Requirements for trailers. Following rules is important, and to properly pass your inspection you’ll want to make sure you are ready after purchasing your new or used trailer. Here are some of the inspection requirements in the state of Texas.

Check Your Trailer’s Brakes in Texas

Does your new or used trailer purchase have a gross weight of over 4,500 pounds? If so, you’ll need to make sure you have properly working brakes on your trailer. You’ll also need to pass an annual safety inspection for your trailer weighing over 4,500 pounds (gross vehicle weight).

Other Inspection Requirements for Trailers in Texas

The annual safety inspection will have a lot of boxes to tick-off on your checklist. Besides working brakes, you’ll also be inspected for working lamps. The inspection of lamps on your trailer will include tail lamps and stop lamps, turn signal lamps, clearance lamps, license plate lamps and side marker lamps. Besides the required working light bulbs and blinkers, you’ll also need to provide reflectors on the side of all trailers as well as the rear red reflectors.

Inspecting Tires & Safety Guards on Texas Trailers

Once you’ve got your brakes, lamps and reflectors checked, you’ll also get your tires and safety guards inspected. If you’ve got four tires (or more) on your rear axle, you’ll need to make sure you have a set of safety guards or tire flaps attached to pass inspection. In addition to the tires and flaps, your overall wheel assembly will be inspected to ensure everything is in proper working condition.

More Inspection Guidelines for Texas Trailers

There are never enough steps to ensure the highest possible safety for Texas trailers. When it’s time for your annual trailer inspection, you’ll also have your vehicle identification number or serial number inspected to make sure everything matches up with the paperwork. Window tinting if installed will also be inspected to be sure it meets state guidelines.

So as you can see, when buying a new or used trailer from Area Trailer Sales and Rentals in Texas, you’ll want to make sure your trailer meets the highest standard of safety around. It is important to stay updated on current guidelines and law requirements for your trailer. With your gained knowledge – from required brake systems to the proper type of side reflectors – you’ll be able to meet and exceed your annual trailer safety inspection.
